NZSO: Berlioz, Debussy & Ravel

For our second Masterworks concert in 2018, Maestro Edo de Waart presents music by three great French composers that create a kaleidoscope of colour and rhythm.

Opening the concert is the first in our series of Landfall works, commissioned by the NZSO to commemorate next year’s 250th anniversary of Captain James Cook’s landfall in New Zealand. This first work is composed by Salina Fisher (Rainphase, 2016).

Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke is no stranger to New Zealand audiences, having performed here in 2012. Her return to perform Berlioz’s song cycle Les nuits d’été is much anticipated.

Debussy’s singular La mer features an expansive orchestration in this Impressionist work evoking the sea. The evening ends with one of Ravel’s most popular and well-known works. With the driving force of the snare drum, Boléro culminates in a mesmerising climax.
